Year 8 Scheme of Work

 

Year 8 students will use the ICT4 Life course for the bulk of their ICT work. They will begin by working on an assignment which introduces the idea of databases. Files marked with an asterisk (*) are the ones to be downloaded by students for use in lessons.

The first lesson covers the annotation of work.

In this lesson, students are shown how to use PowerPoint to display annotated work. They are given a Publisher file to screen capture, paste into PowerPoint and annotate.

Lesson 1
Lesson plan In this lesson, students are shown a PowerPoint presentation about databases.They are supplied with a help sheet and details of houses to be included in the database.
They can also download a spreadsheet to help them choose the correct data type for each field.

Lesson 2
Lesson plan Students learn how to set up a form for data entry in a database.

Lesson 3
Lesson plan

Students are introduced to the idea of searching, or setting up a query, in a database.
If necessary, they can download a database to practise searching. Ideally, they should use their own database.
There is a also a game available in which students use a database to solve crimes.

Lesson 4
Lesson plan Students learn how to set out information from a database in a report, which gives them more control over the layout.

Extension work
 

These are more advanced activities. In the own learning task, students answer questions about the use of databases in the real world.
The People database contains over 1000 records; students are asked to do searches for a marketing company to find people who fit defined criteria.
